THIS GIVEAWAY IS OVER!

When it comes to baking, I think my favorite thing to bake is bread.  I love the smell of yeast.  I love to knead the dough and feel it go from lumpy to smooth.  I love to watch it rise.  And I love to eat it!  So reviewing Simply Great Breads Sweet and Savory Yeasted Treats from America’s Premier Artisan Baker Daniel Leader is “simply” a treat for me!

Have you ever made a braided Challah bread?  I have made it several times.  I love how light and soft it is on the inside and it’s usually a bit sweeter than some breads!  Well, I tested the Whole Wheat Challah Bread recipe in this book.  It was excellent!  Check out my pics!

The dough was easy to make.  I followed the directions by kneading the dough with the dough hook on my mixer.  This is how the dough looked after it rose.

I divided up the dough into 3 equal parts and rolled it into 3 long ropes.

I pressed the 3 ropes together on one end using a little water to make them stick together.

Then I braided it carefully without flattening each rope.

I wet the ends with a little bit of water and pressed them together.

I let it rise again and brushed it carefully with egg wash.

Finally, I baked the bread for about 40 minutes.  It did not disappoint!  I will definitely make it again!  This recipe used a combination of whole wheat flour and all purpose flour, and it wasn’t dense or heavy.  It was exactly the opposite!  Yum!

Here are a few recipes from the book that are on my “To Do” List!

“Luxury” English Muffins

Quick Chestnut Cinnamon Sugar Spirals

Lightly Shaped Parker House Rolls

This cookbook may be small but I think my family and I are really going to enjoy many recipes from this book. I can’t wait to start my “To Do” List!

Simply Great Breads is available at Amazon.com

I am a little bit of a baby… I have a fear of working with yeast. That being said, I would LOVE to learn how to make some of the sweeter breads. I made focaccia once and it turned out SO yummy! Customizing the toppings was my favorite part.

What a fun giveaway! I’m a mess at baking which is why I really need a cookbook to help me 😉 I’ve made no-knead bread but it turned out bland (although rather pretty). I made French bread at a Sur La Table class, which was also bland. At any rate, I’ll have to check out this book. Happy Tuesday!

I have baked all kinds of breads in my history of baking - rye, pumpernickel, whole wheat, white, cheese, French, even braided challah. Also, breads with sourdough, but our favorites would be the whole wheat and darker varieties. That’s why the whole wheat challah sounds appealing to me.

I love to make dinner rolls - whole wheat or a recipe using pumpkin - and pizza dough. I would love to try and make cinnamon rolls sometime!

I remember having a recipe for refrigerator rolls that was wonderfully light and fluffy, but I haven’t made these for years and I’m not even sure what I did with the recipe. I’d love to try making them again though.

I’ve made bread in a bread machine, though, but I’d love to learn to make breads in the oven that are healthy whole grains.
